Brazilian mines participate in US Seminar on Sustainability
Belmont Emeralds and Cruzeiro Mine will be prominent participants at the “Expanding Horizons” seminar during the Initiatives in Art and Culture’s (IAC) 2024 Gold and Diamond Conference in New York. Represented by their CEOs, Marcelo Ribeiro (Belmont Emeralds) and Douglas Neves (Cruzeiro Mine), these Brazilian companies will share their experiences and innovative practices in sustainable mining, contributing to a global dialogue on environmental responsibility and social impact in the gemstone and jewelry industry. Both companies are part of Precious Brazil, a sector project created by the Brazilian Gems and Jewellery Trade Association (IBGM) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), aimed at promoting Brazilian gemstone and jewelry companies abroad.
Belmont Emeralds: pioneers in sustainable mining
Located in Itabira, Minas Gerais, Belmont Emeralds is globally recognized for its innovative and sustainable practices in emerald mining. The company operates throughout the entire production chain, from extraction to international commercialization of the gemstones, applying advanced technologies at every stage. With a conscious, ethical, and reliable approach, Belmont ensures a continuous and high-quality supply, guaranteeing the origin of its products for the jewelry industry and final consumers.
Cruzeiro Mine: a success story
Operating since 1940, Cruzeiro Mine is renowned for producing tourmalines of all colors, including the coveted rubellite. Located in Minas Gerais, the company produces an average of eight tons of the mineral annually. Additionally, Cruzeiro Mine prioritizes sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. It adopts minimally mechanized underground mining, which minimizes environmental impact and optimizes waste management, and uses eucalyptus-based support from its own cultivation, reducing transport emissions and contributing to the reforestation of worked areas. The company also undertakes actions to preserve watercourses and natural forests.
Expanding horizons seminar: innovation and sustainability
The “Expanding Horizons” seminar at IAC’s 2024 Gold and Diamond Conference in New York aims to deepen discussions on promoting positive changes in the gemstone and jewelry industry, with a focus on the economic and social particularities of the Global South. Coordinated by IBGM – The Brazilian Gems and Jewellery Trade Association in partnership with ApexBrasil – Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency – the project currently serves approximately 150 companies in the industry.
